Filtration & UV (FUV)
< >
Being a live aboard boater, and having FUV installed from April 2021- August 2022, I have real life experience of how this system works.
< >
The FUV system works by taking water from the canal/river/lake and pumping it through 4 different filters and an ultraviolet sterilisation unit before going directly to the taps, making it completely independent of any existing water tank system you may already have installed. You can merely switch between the two using the change over valve.
< >
I did not drink nor recommend drinking the water from FUV. However, I did regularly use it for showering, washing up and running the washing machine. For drinking water I simply switched back to the main tank, let the cold tap run for a minute and filled water bottles. As you can imagine, by doing this your stored tap water could potentially last for months before you need to visit a water point.
< >
The FUV system is 600 mm x 600 mm with a depth of 150 mm. However, the layout can be adjusted to accommodate your space. This system uses only very slightly more power than a standard water tank system.
< >
The life of the filters is directly connected to usage and the quality of the water running through them. The cost of a filter change is £80 and by using mine everyday with reasonably clear canal water, I was changing them every 3-4 months.

Personally, as a continuous cruiser, I believe that without the FUV system I probably wouldn’t still be
living
aboard
today. However, with this system I used
water as if I
was
on the grid.

A valuable piece of advice I would give is to keep realistic expectations on the clarity of the water. A glass of water from this system will look clear, but if you fill a white hand-basin you will notice a slight discolouration. This doesn't indicate a problem as the water as its just gone through the UV Pack. Even clear water can be contaminated.
< >
On completion of the installation of the FUV system, a 12 in 1 water test will be undertaken to test for most elements including bacteria and nitrates. I will also provide you with some basic water test strips so that you can monitor the water quality yourself.
