Reverse Osmosis (RO)

<  >

Below is the display unit for the Crick Boat Show 2023

I've had an RO System fitted since August 2022

Reverse Osmosis works by forcing water through a membrane filter at a high pressure that divides the water into pure and waste, the waste then being returned to the water source. The technology is a commercial process that's become more domestic over the last few years. It's used to purify both fresh and sea water for drinking, however, for sea water a much higher pressure and more expensive membrane is required. The RO I provide, like the FUV, will only work with fresh water.

The RO system sits in a space of only 540mm by 380mm with a hight of 500mm but will be set out to fit the installation area where possible.

The only advantage of RO over FUV is that you will get clear, pure water. If correctly maintained the RO Combination Filter & Membrane can provided many thousands of  litres. The cost of a new RO Combination Filter & Membrane is around £150. The 2 Primary Filters required to remove the sediment will need to be replaced every 1 - 3 thousand litres, depending on sediment levels, at a cost of £1.50 each. You will be left with a box of 10. I will also leave you with my suppliers details for purchasing new filters/membranes, however, you're not restricted and can also buy from other suppliers.

The main disadvantage of this system is that it can’t produce water fast enough to give good pressure directly to the taps and won’t be able to supply a shower. The RO system is therefore set up to backfill your existing water tank, you simply switch the unit on to top up. Think of RO as a slow running tap at 1.5-2 litres per minute. The system uses 10 amps per hour at 12v for 90-120 litres of water. I recommend using the RO to fill your water tank when the sun is shinning (solar) or when you have your engine running to charge your batteries.

>

On completion of the installation of the RO system, a 12 in 1 water test will be undertaken to test for most elements including bacteria and nitrates. I will also provide you with some basic water test strips so that you can monitor the water quality yourself.

Reverse Osmosis will provide clear, pure water at source, making it more than perfect for showers, washing up, washing machines etc. Out of interest to my business I have carried out many drinking water tests over time, taking water from the same cold tap in my kitchen. No test has ever come back with a negative result and we do drink the water. However, for legal reasons drinking water from RO is your choice. You must also factor in the condition of your water tank and the time the water has been stored. Remember RO water doesn't have chlorine in it. It's not something I've done as it would invalid my water tests but it makes sense to top up with tap water from time to time keeping a mix in the tank. You also have the option to add chlorine tablets. If you intend drinking the water, please do your own research. Here is good place to start Rayne

The full supply and installation cost of this system within a 100-mile radius of Leeds, West Yorkshire is £1890 with a 1-year warranty (excluding membrane & filters). Any distance over a 100-mile radius will incur an additional charge of 75p per mile.
